π Managing a Town
Creating a town makes you responsible for more than just protecting your base.
Mayors and town leadership can manage land, residents, ranks, permissions, taxes, outposts, and the town bank.
Creating a new town costs $2,500.
πΊοΈ Claiming Landβ
Towns expand by claiming additional land.
The first additional claim starts at $10, with the price increasing as the town continues to expand.
Claim prices increase by 10% with each additional claim, up to a maximum of $100 per claim.
Use:
/town claim
to claim available land for your town.
Unclaiming land does not refund the original claim cost.
β Bonus Claimsβ
A town's normal claim capacity is affected by its population and town level.
Additional claim capacity can also be purchased.
Bonus claims begin at $50, with the price increasing by 15% for each additional bonus claim purchased, up to a maximum of $250 each.
π Town Levelsβ
Towns automatically progress through different levels as their population grows.
Higher town levels provide additional land capacity and can improve other town benefits.
| Residents | Town Level | Claim Limit | Outposts |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Settlement | 12 | 0 |
| 2 | Hamlet | 24 | 0 |
| 4 | Village | 64 | 1 |
| 8 | Town | 112 | 1 |
| 12 | Large Town | 160 | 1 |
| 18 | City | 224 | 2 |
| 24 | Large City | 288 | 2 |
| 32 | Metropolis | 352 | 2 |
Growing your population also improves your town's upkeep rate and other Towny bonuses.
π° Upkeepβ
Towns pay upkeep based on the amount of land they have claimed.
The base upkeep is $10 per claimed plot per day.
Your town level applies a discount to this cost, meaning larger and more populated towns receive better upkeep rates.
Outposts have an additional $50 per day upkeep cost.
Keep enough money in the town bank to cover your expenses.
Use:
/town deposit [amount]
to add money to the town bank.
β οΈ Bankruptcyβ
Running out of money does not immediately delete your town.
Instead, the town can enter bankruptcy and begin accumulating debt.
While bankrupt, the town is heavily restricted and cannot perform normal expansion activities such as claiming land or recruiting new residents.
Money can still be deposited into the town bank:
/town deposit [amount]
Once the debt has been completely repaid, the town returns to normal.
β οΈ Keep an eye on your town bank. A larger town may have more benefits, but more land also means more upkeep.
ποΈ Outpostsβ
Outposts allow towns to establish protected land away from their main settlement.
Creating an outpost costs $5,000, with an additional $50 daily upkeep for each outpost.
Outposts become available as your town grows:
- Village: 1 outpost
- Town: 1 outpost
- Large Town: 1 outpost
- City: 2 outposts
- Large City: 2 outposts
- Metropolis: 2 outposts
π₯ Town Ranksβ
Mayors can assign ranks to residents to help manage the town.
π Co-Mayorβ
A Co-Mayor has extensive control over the town and can perform most of the same management tasks as the Mayor.
Only give this rank to someone you trust.
β Assistantβ
Assistants can help manage important parts of the town, including claiming land, inviting residents, managing plots, and changing certain town settings.
π Helperβ
Helpers receive additional access to interact with switches and other usable objects on town-owned land.
π οΈ Builderβ
Builders receive broad building permissions throughout their own town.
π Sheriffβ
Sheriffs can use Towny's jail system to jail and release town residents.
π Managing Plotsβ
Mayors and authorized town members can divide town land into personal plots for residents.
Plots can be put up for sale, claimed by residents, and configured with their own permissions.
This lets towns create neighborhoods, shops, farms, or other areas without giving every resident unrestricted access to the entire town.
βοΈ Town Permissionsβ
Towny permissions control four major types of interaction:
- Build β placing blocks
- Destroy β breaking blocks
- Switch β interacting with containers, doors, buttons, and similar objects
- Item Use β using certain items
Permissions can be managed at both the town and individual plot level.
Be careful when changing permissions for outsiders or allies, as these settings can give players outside your town access to your land.
π·οΈ Town Settingsβ
Mayors can also configure several aspects of their town, including things such as:
- Whether the town is open for anyone to join
- Whether the town spawn is public
- Plot permissions
- Resident taxes
- Plot taxes
- PvP
- Mob spawning
- Fire
- Explosions
New towns begin closed and private.
π΅ Taxesβ
Mayors can use Towny's tax system to help fund the town.
New towns begin with their taxes set to $0, so taxes are not automatically charged just because you create or join a town.
If a Mayor chooses to enable taxes, those funds can help cover the town's upkeep and other expenses.
